Rockstar Games studio co-lead Rob Nelson spoke to IGN in the lead-up to GTA VI's November 19 launch, officially confirming several world size and NPC details that had previously only circulated as community estimates.
Map Size: Three Times Red Dead Redemption 2
GTA VI's map is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's world — itself widely considered one of the largest and most detailed open worlds ever made. For context, RDR2 covered roughly 75 square kilometres of detailed terrain. By this comparison, Leonida would clock in at around 225 square kilometres — dwarfing GTA V's Los Santos and making it the largest map in Rockstar's history by a substantial margin.
600,000 NPC Animations — And How They Work
Nelson confirmed a new animation retargeting system that allows GTA VI to support over 600,000 NPC animations without requiring separate animation sets for every body type. The system adjusts animations on-the-fly to fit NPCs of different heights and builds — enabling a more physically diverse population than any previous Rockstar game. NPCs also follow daily routines and actively respond to and participate in events around them, rather than simply populating the world as background dressing.
Crowd Density from Trailer 1 Was Real
Nelson also addressed the beach crowd scene from Trailer 1 that fans had worried was too ambitious to ship. He confirmed the density shown in trailers reflects the actual game — the population system is capable of sustaining it without significant compromise to performance on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
