The Rockstar Games Workers Union (RGWU), backed by the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) Game Workers Union, announced on July 22, 2026, that it had held its first formal meeting with Rockstar management — a milestone in a recognition campaign that has been building since employees submitted a formal request on June 30.

What Came Out of the Meeting

The union described the outcome as a step in the right direction, saying both sides agreed on a roadmap toward a faster negotiation process. Rockstar has not agreed to voluntary recognition, and the next step for both parties is defining the bargaining unit — the specific group of employees the union would be able to represent.

Who the Union Represents

The RGWU says its membership spans Rockstar's UK studios in Edinburgh, Dundee, Lincoln, Leeds, and London, with organizing efforts underway since 2019. It describes itself as the largest game studio union in Europe and says it's actively recruiting more Rockstar employees ahead of any recognition vote.

Five Core Demands

The union's push centers on five headline issues: an end to unpaid crunch, full pay transparency around salaries and bonuses, remote and flexible working arrangements, protections against layoffs, and safeguards against jobs being displaced by AI tools. Of these, protections against AI-driven job displacement are seen as the toughest sticking point for Rockstar to agree to.

A Separate Legal Fight Still Looms

The recognition campaign runs alongside — but separately from — an employment tribunal tied to the dismissal of more than 30 Rockstar workers, which Rockstar has said followed the sharing of confidential information through what it considered a public forum; the union disputes that characterization. That tribunal is scheduled to run from September 10 through October 15, 2026, putting both the recognition campaign and the legal case on a collision course with GTA VI's home stretch before its November 19 launch.
